<p>An electric vehicle is a vehicle that uses one or more electric motors for propulsion eliminating the need for combustion engines and creating a cleaner alternative. Electric vehicles are also known as EVs, which stand for 'electric vehicles.' EVs can be motor-driven bicycles, cars, buses, trucks and who knows what else in the future with companies like Canadian Pacific Rail looking at electric trains. Cars are the most common form of EVs. In this article, we will talk about the 5 different types of batteries that can be used in EVs, such as Lithium-ion, nickel-metal, lead-acid, ultra-conductors, Solid-state, and vehicles they can be found in.</p>
<h3>Lithium-ion (LI-ION)</h3>
<p>The Lithium-ion battery is used most popularly in electrical devices such as laptops and phones and now electric vehicles. The first EV to use this battery was the 1996 Toyota Prius. Sony did the world's first mass production of these batteries in 1991. These batteries can be found in many electric vehicles, including&nbsp;<a href="https://heyauto.com/cars/tesla" target="_self">Telsa models</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://heyauto.com/blog/heyauto-showcase/the-all-new-2021-ford-mustang-mach-e-mustang-redesigned" target="_self">Fords Mustang Mach-E</a>,&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://heyauto.com/cars/nissan-leaf" target="_self">Nissan Leaf</a>. The disadvantage to these batteries is that they can take up to 3 hours to recharge depending on your charging method compared to different vehicles, which only take 30 minutes to recharge their batteries. Lithium-ion batteries are costly to make, causing their prices to be higher than other types of batteries. They work by having lithium ions move from the negative electrode (anode), through an electrolyte, to the positive electrode (cathode), where chemical reactions release energy in the form of heat and electricity. The electrolytes used in these batteries include Lithium cobalt oxide, lithium manganese oxide, or lithium iron phosphate. These batteries have a much higher energy density when compared to nickel-metal hydride batteries which is why they are preferred for cars.</p>
<h3>Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH)</h3>
<p>Toyota produced the first fully electric vehicle using nickel-metal hydride technology in 1996. The first mass production of nickel-metal hydride batteries was by Toshiba, Daimler-Benz, and Motorola in 1997. Nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries are used in plug-in hybrids such as the&nbsp;<a href="https://heyauto.com/cars/chevrolet-volt" target="_self">Chevrolet Volt</a>, the Honda Accord PHV, and the&nbsp;<a href="https://heyauto.com/cars/kia-soul-ev" target="_self">Kia Soul EV</a>. These cars can run on either electricity or petrol. They have a maximum speed of 130km/h, and they can go nearly 640 kilometers without recharging their batteries, which takes just 3 minutes with fast charging! The NiMH takes 8 hours to recharge its batteries compared to other cars with Lithium-ion batteries, which only take 3 hours to recharge their batteries. EV charging stations are the only thing that drivers of these cars can use when they're on the road as they take around 8 hours to recharge their batteries. It is very safe and durable as it will not explode even if it is damaged. The advantage that nickel-metal hydride batteries have over other batteries is that their energy density is higher than different types of batteries. The disadvantage to this type of battery is that its life span isn't as long as lithium-ion batteries.</p>
<h3>Lead-acid (LA)</h3>
<p>Lead Acid batteries are used in almost every car today alongside the combustion engine to power nonelectric vehicles today. These batteries can take up to 8 hours to charge compared to other types of Lithium-ion batteries, which only take 3 hours to recharge their batteries. Lead-acid car batteries weigh 50kgs, and they also need air conditioning systems that use more energy than most other types of car batteries which means that drivers of these cars cannot turn on their air conditioners when they're on the road because this would drain their batteries. The energy stored in Lead-acid batteries is low compared to other batteries, which is making an entire vehicle with these batteries makes the vehicle a lot heavier than need be. However, their safety is their advantage over different types of car batteries, such as lithium-ion and nickel-metal hydride. They are not explosive, and there is no chance of catching on fire even if they are damaged. Also, lead-acid batteries do not need a lot of maintenance, and they can last for more than ten years before they need to be replaced.</p>
<h3>Ultra-conductors</h3>
<p>Ultra-conductors are another form of electric vehicle batteries with a higher energy density when compared to other types of batteries. They also have a much lower weight than different car batteries, such as lead-acid or nickel-metal hydride. However, the disadvantage that ultra-conductors have is that they need very high temperatures to work, which means that these cars cannot be used in cold climates where there might be snow (-40 degrees). Electric vehicles with this type of battery include the 2011 Renault Fluence Z.E., the 2020 Nissan Pivo2, and the Mitsubishi i-MiEV none of these vehicles are available in Canada because of the temperate rating. Also, ultra-conductors only allow for a minimal number of charges, and they will only last up to 5 years.</p>
<h3>Solid-state</h3>
<p>Solid-state batteries are not used in any electric vehicles&hellip;Yet.&nbsp;<a href="https://heyauto.com/cars/toyota" target="_self">Toyota</a> (with Panasonic as a partner) has announced recently their $13.6 Billion dollar investment in battery advancements for EVs, however not all that money will be strictly solid-state they have mentioned it will be the large majority of their focus as they recognize the potential it holds. Other companies have made similar commitments as well.<br />Solid-state batteries can make electric vehicles much faster than they already are as they can reduce the resistance inside the battery, increasing the voltage and current supplied by the storm. This gives more power to accelerate the car, making it go from 0-100km in just 2 seconds! However, this does not significantly impact the speed of cars with ultra-conductors as they already have very high rates even without reducing internal resistance. Solid-state batteries are lighter, making them easier to carry around, so when they get utilized in electric vehicles, they wouldn't need air-conditioning systems to keep temperatures. This is a huge advantage as while driving with the air conditioning system on will be able to drive for longer without having to recharge its batteries.</p>
<p>In conclusion, electric cars use different batteries, and each style has its benefits and disadvantages. The type of battery used in each electric vehicle depends on the other features and design of the car, making them faster or allowing them to drive for longer distances. However, regardless of what type of battery is used, they all have one thing in common: they provide a cleaner alternative to gas-powered cars and help save our environment!</p>

<h3>Forward Collision Warning with Brake Support</h3>
<p>Ford has introduced this new feature that puts extra sensors on the front of your vehicle that scans vehicles travelling ahead of you in the same direction. If determined the vehicle ahead is travelling at a slower speed than you are rapidly approaching it will flash red dotted lights onto the windshield. If the driver ignores these warnings the brakes will start to pre-charge (they will not break for you) for when you do apply your brakes, even lightly, they will apply almost a full stop to avoid rear-ending the vehicle in front of you.&nbsp;<a href="https://heyauto.com/cars/toyota" target="_self">Toyota</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://heyauto.com/cars/chevrolet" target="_self">Chevrolet</a>&nbsp;have taken it a step further by adding an automatic braking feature to help avoid collisions, the brakes will only override if the vehicle detects an immediate impact. This feature is designed to eliminate tailgating and rear endings that could have been avoided. If you plan on attaching a front bully bar or snowplow you will need to turn this sensor off.</p>
<h3>Lane Departure Warning</h3>
<p>Not to be confused with blind-spot detection, this feature alerts drivers if they are drifting into a lane or taking a turn without using their turn signal. The lane departure warning technology is utilizing sensors that are reading the painted road lines on the road, so unfortunately if you are on an unmarked or snow-covered road this feature will not work. The driver can determine how they would like to receive the warning, they can choose between a visual on the dashboard, an audible sound through the speakers, or a vibration through the steering wheel or seat. While you might not think this feature is unnecessary, it could help you avoid falling asleep while driving and causing an accident and encourages drivers to utilize their turn signal.</p>
<h3>Emergency Braking Assist</h3>
<p>If you're accelerating on the highway and suddenly there's a car stopped in front of you, do you hit the brakes hard enough to prevent impact? It takes a split second for your brain to process this information while going 100 kilometres an hour and it was found that even in immediate emergencies people don&rsquo;t press the brakes hard enough to hit the floor. This is where emergency braking assist comes to the rescue. If the vehicle detects your attempt to come to a rapid stop the emergency brake assist will click in and push the brake to the floor, aiding in your attempt to come to a complete stop. This could be very beneficial on our slick winter roads. However, after the emergency brake assist does actuate you will need to reset your brakes by turning turn over the engine again and feathering the brakes to redistribute the brake fluid before continuing your drive. Honda specifically calls this feature the Collison Mitigation Braking system to sound more sophisticated.</p>
<h3>Improved Blind Spot Monitoring</h3>
<p>Blind-spot monitoring is a feature that's been available for many years. There was even a time when this system would beep to warn the driver if there was another car in the blind spot, but that can get old quickly and almost seem like it's nagging you, especially in congested traffic. Newer vehicles include a more sophisticated version of this older technology by using cameras and heads-up displays to show you exactly where another vehicle is sitting in your blind spot when you turn on your turning indicator. Gone are the days of just a small light turning on, in your mirror. This feature is great for making sure you don't hit another vehicle when trying to switch lanes or make a turn.</p>
<h3>Rear Cross-Traffic Alert</h3>
<p>Kia has taken blind-spot monitoring to the next stage with the rear cross-traffic alert by taking a couple of these safety features and combining them to ensure you are safe while backing up without needing a backup camera. Utilizing radar and ultrasonic waves the sensors located on the back left and right of the vehicle will alert the driver when reversing at slow speeds that a vehicle in your blind spot is approaching giving you ample time to stop, preventing a collision. The warnings go up in severity the closer a vehicle gets, they begin as an indicator light on the side mirror, then progress to the dashboard display and finally an audible warning with vibration in the steering wheel as a final collision warning.</p>
<p>While these are some great safety features to be aware of, there's more to be done with car safety than just warning drivers of potential hazards around them. With advancements in autonomous driving who knows what the future of driving safety will look like. <p>Lake Minnewanka is impressive for a number of reasons. To start, it&rsquo;s a massive body of water that seemingly has mountains growing directly out of it. The best way to experience this is by boat tour. No joke, it feels as though you&rsquo;re cruising through an Icelandic Fjord, except you&rsquo;re actually cradled in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, 1,500 meters above sea level. It&rsquo;s also incredibly cold, so not the best for swimming unless it's a scorching day, but the beauty absolutely earns it a spot as one of the best lakes in Alberta.</p>
<p>Bonus: It&rsquo;s connected to Two Jack Lake, which is&nbsp;slightly&nbsp;warmer, and usually has people flocking on hot summer days.</p>

The views over Canmore and down the Bow Valley are breathtaking!</p>

<p>The trail to Lake Agnes is heavily trafficked, making it a fairly accessible hike. After grinding up some switchbacks, you&rsquo;ll come to Mirror Lake, a tiny body of water with amazing reflections. Be sure to have a little snack and take in the views! Next stop: Lake Agnes and the Tea House. After a few more switchbacks you&rsquo;ll come to the nature oasis nestled between Mount St. Piran and the Big Bee Hive. Grab a cup of tea and a bowl of soup from the Tea House, give your legs a rest, and take in the views of Lake Agnes.</p>
<p>Bonus: If you&rsquo;re feeling like you have some gas left in the tank, we suggest heading to the top of the Big Bee Hive. Follow around the back of Lake Agnes and be prepared for steep switchbacks. We promise the views of Lake Louise down below are worth the extra sweat!</p>

Once you&rsquo;ve reached the end, you&rsquo;ll get to have your lunch with the soothing sounds of a waterfall pouring out of the mountain overhead.</p>

The main floor has art from local artists, as well as suggested reads, both of which are worth checking out. Grab a coffee from&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/lukescentrallibrary/?hl=en" target="_self">Lukes</a>&nbsp;and wander among the rows of books and enjoy the views from the upper floors.</p>
<p>Just next door is Studio Bell and the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/nmc_canada/?hl=en" target="_self">National Music Centre</a>, which celebrates Canadian music in all its glory. Learn about musical instruments and Canadian music icons while you marvel at the amazing architecture! They often have events, so be sure to check their website and see what&rsquo;s on. After walking around the National Music Centre, you might want to head to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/rossocoffeeroasters/?hl=en" target="_self">Rosso Coffee Roasters</a>&nbsp;to take a load off.</p>

The view overlooks all of downtown Calgary, which is especially breathtaking as the sunsets. If it happens to be melting hot, you might want to opt for the river instead. Right across the 10th St Bridge from Kensignton is the 10th Street Wave, where you can watch Calgary&rsquo;s river surfing community do their thing.</p>
<p>Kensington has numerous restaurants and bars that are ideal for those hot summer nights.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/eatcrowyyc/?hl=en" target="_self">EATCROW snack bar</a>&nbsp;recently opened and has become a popular destination for light bites.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/thekensingtonpub/?hl=en" target="_self">The Kensington Pub</a>&nbsp;is a more traditional pub, but the setting makes you feel like you&rsquo;re having a pint in The Shire!</p>

A less expensive option (and my personal favourite) is&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/inglewoodpizzayyc/?hl=en" target="_self">Inglewood Pizza</a>, this little shop has two tables and pizza that is delicious in every way. There are also more refined offerings, such as&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/woppizza/?hl=en" target="_self">Without Papers Pizza</a>, which is located on the second floor of a rustic building and often has live music, and many others!</p>
<p>Anyone looking to grab a drink will love Inglewood. Not only are there tons of pubs and bars, including the famous&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/thebluescancalgary/?hl=en" target="_self">Blues Can</a>, a live blues bar, but it&rsquo;s also the hub for Calgary&rsquo;s growing craft brewery scene. <p>Last but not least is 17th Avenue. This is the closest thing Calgary has to a Sunset Boulevard. As the sky darkens, the streets come to life. People cruise up and down 17th Ave with their fancy cars and loud motorcycles, restaurants and bars fill with laughs and cheers, and of course, Bird Scooters are everywhere.</p>
<p>17th has new offerings all the time,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/thelulubar/?hl=en" target="_self">Lulu Bar</a>&nbsp;is one of the most recent additions with a huge patio to enjoy the fleeting warm weather.
