Packing up the car, driving away while trying to remember what you forgot, filling up at the gas station, and the best part: picking out snacks. This is an important choice. There needs to be an appropriate mix of sweet and salty, crunchy and chewy, and you definitely want to keep the mess to a minimum. Here at HeyAuto, we pride ourselves on being what you might call “road trip experts”, so check out our list of the best road trip snacks:
There’s no two ways around it, popcorn is the king of snacks. It is versatile, relatively mess free, and generally more healthy than those bags of chips we all love. Eat it plain, with butter, salt, pepper, cinnamon and brown sugar, cheese, caramel—you name it, it works on popcorn.
Dried mango at least gives you the illusion that you’re eating something healthy. There’s just something incredible about those sugar covered pieces of heaven. The mess is manageable in a car and it’s easy to snack on whether you’re a driver or passenger.
Yogurt covered pretzels are the perfect balance of sweet and salty, making the a delightful palate cleanser from snacks that are generally one of the other. Once again, they’re essentially mess free and perfect for passengers or drivers.
You can’t go wrong with good ol’ raisins and peanuts (GORP), its a tried and true combination that has withstood decades of scrutiny. We have yet to meet anyone to that likes raisins, yet trail mix is still a smash hit on the snack chart. If you’re really adverse to raisins, there’s plenty of options with dried blueberries or cranberries too! Bonus point for getting some with M&Ms or Smarties.
Jerky
Sure, you can pick up some jerky from the roadside gas station, but we’ll always suggest plotting your route through a town that has its own jerky shop. The beauty of it is that there are virtually endless variations. Different types of meat and flavouring means that each experience can be different. We suggest getting in on the honey garlic beef jerky.
It’s an easy one. When we say “chocolate” we don’t just mean your standard bar of Cadbury milk chocolate (although that’s pretty good too), we think you should get more adventurous with it. We’re talking chilli-filled, stuffed with wafers, covered in nuts, whatever your heart desires. A road trip is a sacred event, you should treat it as such.
Apples
We’ll round off this list with a class: the apple. Healthy, clean, and delicious. It might not be the most exciting, but you can’t argue with its efficacy.
There you have it, the best road trip snacks for every journey. They’re easy to eat on the road and sure to elevate your road trip experience. Do you have a staple for your adventures? Let us know!
