The Best lakes in Alberta
Alberta's Lakes
It may be September, but that doesn’t mean lake season is over in Alberta! Who knows, we could have snow one week and 30-degree heat the next—stranger things have happened. Alberta has no shortage of amazing lakes, nestled between towering mountains or as an oasis amongst the rolling prairie. Water sports, fishing trips, and beach days are some of Albertan’s favorite warm weather pass times, and there’s still plenty of time to enjoy them before we descend into winter.
Lake Minnewanka
Lake Minnewanka is impressive for a number of reasons. To start, it’s a massive body of water that seemingly has mountains growing directly out of it. The best way to experience this is by boat tour. No joke, it feels as though you’re cruising through an Icelandic Fjord, except you’re actually cradled in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, 1,500 meters above sea level. It’s also incredibly cold, so not the best for swimming unless it's a scorching day, but the beauty absolutely earns it a spot as one of the best lakes in Alberta.
Bonus: It’s connected to Two Jack Lake, which is slightly warmer, and usually has people flocking on hot summer days.
Waterton Lakes
Waterton Lakes is in close contention with Lake Minnewanka for the most stunning lakes in Alberta. Once again, it seems as though mountains just jut out of these crystal clear waters. They’re also quite cold, but great for activities like canoeing and kayaking amongst the reflections of mountain peaks.
Sylvan Lake
Sylvan Lake is a classic in Southern Alberta. The waters are much warmer than the previous two lakes, making it perfect for swimming and other water activities. It also has sandy beaches for soaking up the sun and building sand castles. The perfect spot for families!
Cold Lake
Sandy beaches and clean water, what more could you ask for? Not only is it a great place for a family getaway, but its also a fisher’s paradise!
Lake Newell
Lake Newell is also known for its sandy beaches and abundant fishing. The water is warm, all types of boats are welcome, and rentals are available for other types of water activities, too.
